I ran this a few years back, however given the weather here in K.C. I thought it was worth posting again.

The Hot Toddy

Well seeing that cold and flu season seems to be upon us here in the Midwest and indeed I feel it a little more than most this week as I caught (or it caught me) my first cold in almost two years. That being said I thought it would be a good time to blog on The Hot Toddy! (And not you T.B. (the second most interesting man in the world))

According to Wikipedia a Hot Toddy is a mixed drink, usually including alcohol (duh!), that is served hot.

While that may seem elementary to you I remember a day years ago in my youth when I had an August sore throat and cold. I was looking for a remedy and remembered a friend who would know the answer. I called Joe Heinen Sr. I always called him Mr. Heinen and I will never forget when he answered the phone it sounded like I had just woke him from a nap. Once he knew it was me he cheerfully gave me a recipe.

Hot Tea
Whiskey
Honey
Lemon

Well that was a miracle cure for sure and it works as well now as it did then.

Now for a couple of new ideas:

The Green Tea Hot Toddy:

The Green Tea Toddy
Honey to taste
Four Roses Bourbon to taste

I like using Green Tea as to me it has a better taste. Yes the color is much lighter and you could argue that it is not “tea” colored, but to each his own.

I like to get the water boiling hot which helps when you add the Whiskey to keep the Hot in Hot Toddy. I also like Honey as to me it is more of a good mix with the Bourbon than sugar or sweetener. I am also not a big fan of lemon, but add a squeeze if you like.

A couple of other ways to try a Hot Toddy would be to substitute any tea of choice for the green tea. Also you might enjoy substituting a Cheery or Honey Bourbon if you like the flavored Bourbons.

Hope the cooler weather finds you in great health, but if not try a Hot Toddy. Every time I have one I think of Mr. Heinen and think how much he is missed.

A few weeks back we took the Amtrak from K.C. to Naperville Ill. and as usual we had a great time. If you have never taken the opportunity to travel by train you do not know what you are missing. I recommend for your first trip nothing over four hours just in case you may not enjoy train travel. A Spittoon and a Blanket

Yes, what I really meant was a chamber pot; however at one in the morning staging down the long dim hallway with the creaky wooden floors and facing the long stairway down to the bathroom spittoon was all I could think of. The evening started innocent enough as we were traversing the interstate from K.C. MO to NW Iowa for a visit. I did not have a drink until after 5:00 and I was not driving, but as usually I never went anywhere without my trusty ten shot flask. That day it was loaded with Buffalo Trace Bourbon. By the way it had been awhile since I had imbibed in Buffalo Trace and I had forgotten how good it was. We arrived at the farm and continued happy hour. As the night progressed I opened the new bottle of Four Roses (the official Bourbon of MySideOfTheBar) that Central Patti had purchased as part of a case and kept drinking throughout the night. The Key West Cocktail Challenge

Recently we were on the road with MySideOfTheBar in Key West with a couple of "Unusual Suspect" friends of ours. As you might expect we were in a bar when A.S. found a brochure for the Key West Cocktail Challenge. Also as you might expect we took up the challenge. The premise was easy, visit 6 participating bars, enjoy their signature cocktail and you get a T-Shirt. You can visit them in any order and take as long as you need to. (you could even do it in 6 days, but...) I am not going to try to describe each bar as you can follow the links to see and learn more. The first stop was The Green Parrot Bar . The Green Parrot is an open air old school bar that I absolutely loved. Their signature drink was Root Beer Barrel and at least two of us liked it ;) Stop two took us to Charlie Mac's and beside the great Signature Drink, it is also a BBQ joint.
