This is not a typical blog here at MySideOfTheBar, however since I have been doing more drinking that last few weeks and since there is a tie in to last week’s blog, Summer Cocktails, I thought this would be apropos.
I have to admit I know the least about General MacArthur than I do any of the other Five Star Generals, however when I stumbled across this recipe I realized I had all the ingredients on had to mix one up.
1.5 oz. Straight Rye Whiskey (I used Old Overholt)
1 oz. Dry Red Wine
.5 oz. Cherry Brandy ( I used Krischwasser)
.5 oz. Cointreau
2 oz. Orange Juice
1 oz. Lime Juice
Combine all ingredients with ice in a shaker and shake well. Strain into Collins or Rocks glass with cracked ice top with chilled soda water. Stir and Salute.
The taste of this cocktail is the sum of all parts and is a nice refreshing summer drink. A little bitter and you can taste the wine, but still a drink I would make again.
While researching this I found an interesting story on another Five Star General, Omar Bradley. According to rumor General Bradley enjoyed Old Fashions, and when in the field would often substitute orange marmalade for other hard to find ingredients.Trivia:
What is the other name for a Five Star General?
Can you find other drinks associated with the other three Five Star Generals?
