ST. Louis Winter Whiskey Festival

A few weeks back MySideOfTheBar was on the road at the ST. Louis Winter Whiskey Festival. The festival location was at the beautiful Hyatt Regency at the Arch.

There were 90 distilleries and over 175 different Whiskeys represented at the festival.

We were joined by two of the longest standing Usual Suspects, J. and L. P.

As you can see they had a photo booth to commerate the event. This was the picture from early in the evening and you will witness first hand (through photos) the effects that Whiskey can have on certain individuals.

There were 90 distilleries and over 175 different Whiskeys represented at the festival.  When entering the event reception area with our VIP passes there were six cocktail stations where local mixologist were creating specialty Whiskey Cocktails to start the evening with. (be sure to follow @mysideofthebar on Twitter for some of the recipes)

After a few cocktails on the reception area I, as you may expect had to seek out my favoriate distellery.

I was somewhat disapointed that none of our good friends from Four Roses were in attendance and the booth was manned by a local distributor who frankley did not know all the much about Four Roses.

Our VIP tickets to the event entitled us to sample two high end Whiskeys from the Golden Table so that was our next stop. I tried the Suntory Yamazaki 18 yr old Japanese Single Malt. This was a very smokey Whiskey that reminded me of Ardbeg or Laphroaig. The other higher end Whiskey I sampled was Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Straight Rye Whiskey, which was an excellent Rye and priced to actually afford. (Suggested retail 65.00 (USD).

The four of us spent the next hour wandering and sampling

The Johnny Walker Ice Bar

After several "samples" it was back to the photo booth for a mid-even picture

We figured it was about time to grab something to eat and the food for the festival was, well simply amazing. They had four food buffet stations with everything from Orange Brined Roasted Turkey to  Seafood Gumbo. We ate enough to absorb at least a little of the alcohol and then back to the event hall we went.

It was all J.P.and I could do to keep the ladies from looking under the pipers kilts!

We did not sample all the Whiskeys at the event, but we gave it a good try. I concentrated on mostly Rye Whiskey and Bourbons. (more on these future blogs)

As we wandered, staggered for some, past the photo booth on our way out of the event the photographer asked us to pose for a closure picture.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and well this one says a lot! We had an excellent evening which was far from over at this time (more on that later) and sampled many, many, many whiskeys.
